1.   Cure for The King
Once there was a very lazy king. He hardly did any physical activity. As a result he started staying ill. He called the royal doctor and said, "Give medicine to get well. If you don't cure me, I will kill you." The doctor knew laziness was the main cause of the king's illness. Next day the doctor gave the big dumbbells to him and said, "Your Majesty, you must swing these magic balls in your hands every morning and evening for an hour. Do these till your arms start sweating and you will start getting cured." The king did this everyday not knowing that it was an exercise. Within a few weeks his body became fit and he felt alert and energetic. He thanked the doctor and asked the cure's secret. The royal doctor said, "Your Majesty, the magic of this cure will keep you fit till you keep swinging these dumbbells. The day you stop you will became ill again." The doctor had taught the king to keep fit without offending him.
2.   Butterfly Lovers.
Long ago in China, at a time when girls were expected to stay at home and learn household work while the boys went to school, a girl named Zhu conceived a desire to study. Her family was wealthy and Zhu was pampered but her father did not want to go against tradition. When she pestered him he told her if she got admission into a school he would not stop her from studying. He was confident that no school would admit a girl. But Zhu was resourceful. She disguised herself as a boy and managed to get admission into a school in the city of Hangzhou, where her aunt lived. Every morning she would put on her disguise and go to school. There was a boy named Liang in her class. The two were drawn to each other, and in course of time became good friends. As the months and the years passed they became inseparable companions, and Zhu realized that she was in love. She wanted to stay with Liang the rest of her life. She thought of a plan. She told Liang that when they finished school, and he had got a job he should come to her house and ask her father for her sister’s hand. Liang readily agreed. He too did not want to lose Zhu. If he married her sister they could continue to meet. After finishing school, Liang lost no time in taking up a job, and when he had saved enough to get married he hastened to Zhu’s house. Zhu saw him coming, and was overjoyed. It was a year since they had parted and she had missed him terribly. Unable to restrain herself she rushed out shouting, “I’m your friend, as you can see I’m a girl, I cannot live without you!" Liang was dazed by the revelation, but soon recovered and caught Zhu in a warm embrace. Suddenly everything had fallen into place. Now he knew why he had felt such a strong love for Zhu. Zhu took him to her father who listened attentively to what Liang had to say, but when the young man asked for Zhu’s hand, he shook his head.
He told Liang that Zhu had already been promised to another man, a wealthy merchant. Nothing that Liang said could make Zhu’s father change his mind. Liang left, shattered. He felt frighteningly alone. The thought that he would never see Zhu again filled him with pain. On the way, he collapsed and died. When Zhu learnt of Liang’s death she lost all desire to continue living. She pretended to agree to the marriage arranged for her on condition that the wedding procession passed by Liang’s grave. As the wedding procession neared the cemetery the wind began to howl and the sky grew dark. Zhu jumped down from her palanquin and rushing to Liang’s grave threw herself on it, sobbing uncontrollably.A peal of thunder suddenly rent the air. The next moment, a bolt of lightning hit the grave, breaking it open. Zhu leapt into it. The storm subsided as quickly as it had started. When Zhu’s relatives reached the grave and peered into it, all they saw at first was an empty coffin. Then out flew two butterflies, dancing as if they could not believe they were together. And as the people standing around the grave watched in fascination and bewilderment the two lovely butterfly lovers flew out of sight. -This Story of Butterfly Lovers was adopted from Cinese.
3.   Chicken Feed.
Duan Guangqinj was a Chinese magistrate who lived about a hundred years ago. He was famed for the fairness of his judgments. One day while the magistrate was walking through a market he saw a crowd outside a poultry shop. On enquiring what the matter was he learnt that a peasant had accidentally dropped a heavy sack on a chicken, crushing it to death. The chicken was small, worth only about five coins, but the owner of the shop had caught the peasant by his throat and was demanding a hundred. His argument was that the chicken would have grown into a plump bird in another two years and then it would have fetched him the amount he was asking for. Somebody recognized the magistrate, and everybody made way for him. “Judge our case, My Lord!" said the owner of the chicken, letting go of the peasant and bowing obsequiously to the magistrate. “This man, through his carelessness has caused the death of a chicken that would have fetched me a hundred coins in another two years!" Fear had made the peasant’s speech incoherent. Nobody could understand what he was saying. “The price put on the chicken is hundred coins," said the magistrate, to the peasant. “I advise you to pay." There was a gasp from the crowd. Everybody had expected the magistrate to rule in the peasant’s favor. The owner of the chicken was overjoyed. “They said you were fair in your judgments, My Lord," he said, rubbing his hands in glee, “now I can say there is no one fairer than you!" “The Law is always fair," smiled the magistrate. “Tell me, how much grain does a chicken eat in a year?" “About half a sack," said the poultry shop owner. “So in two years the chicken that died would have eaten a whole sack of grain," said Duan Guangqinj. “Please give the sack of grain you’ve saved to this man." The chicken owner turned pale. A sack of grain would cost more than hundred coins.Cowed by the jeers of the crowd, he declared he would not take any money from the peasant, and retreated into the safety of his shop.
4.   The Three Runners.
In the days when whites ruled South Africa and apartheid was the law of the land, two middle-aged blacks met in a whites only section of Johannesburg. One of them had a permit to work in the area, the other did not. This meant he could be put behind bars for trespassing into an exclusive zone. Suddenly they saw a policeman coming towards them, and froze. "Run!" whispered the man with the permit to his friend. "I'll follow." They started running and the policeman shouting "Stop, stop," began chasing them. Finally he caught the second man. "Did you think you could outrun me!" he snarled. "Show me your permit!" The man, playing for time, began fumbling in his pocket and finally produced his permit. The policeman was taken aback. He realized that he had been tricked. The man without the permit was now too far away to be caught. "When you had a permit why did you run!" he bawled. "Doctor's orders," said the man. "He has asked me to run a mile every evening." "Oh, yes?" sneered the policeman. "Then why was your friend running?" "His doctor too has ordered him to run," said the man. The policeman became red with anger. "You think you're very smart, don't you?" he snarled. "But tell me, if you were only running for your health why didn't you stop when you saw me running after you? And don't tell me you didn't see me chasing you... I know you did!" "Of course I knew you were running after me," said the man. "Then why didn't you stop?" asked the policeman, triumphantly. "It was stupid of me," said the man, "but I thought you too had been ordered to run by your doctor."
5.   The Legend Of Malin Kundang
Long time ago, in a tiny town near the coastline in West Sumatera, lived a female and her son, Malin Kundang. Malin Kundang’s papa had actually died when he was a child, as well as he had to live tough with his mom. Malin Kundang was a healthy, diligent, and also strong kid. So when he returned to town he took the Country Mouse with him and showed him into a larder containing flour and oatmeal and figs and honey and dates.
The Country Mouse had never seen anything like it and sat down to enjoy the luxuries his friend provided. But before they had well begun, the door of the larder opened and some one came in. The two Mice scampered off and hid themselves in a narrow and exceedingly uncomfortable hole. Presently, when all was quiet, they ventured out again. But some one else came in, and off they scuttled again. This was too much for the visitor. “Good bye,” said he, “I’m off. You live in the lap of luxury, I can see, but you are surrounded by dangers whereas at home I can enjoy my simple dinner of roots and corn in peace.
7.   The Crying Stone
In a small village, a girl lives with her mother. The girl is very beautiful. Everyday she puts make-up and wears her best clothes. She doesn’t like to help her mother work in a field. The girl is very lazy. One day, the mother asks the girl to accompany her to go to the market to buy some food. At first the girl refuses, but the mother persuades her by saying they are going to buy new clothes. The girl finally agrees. But she asks her mother to walk behind her. She doesn’t want to walk side by side with her mother. Although her mother is very sad, she agrees to walk behind her daughter.
On the way to the market, everybody admires the girl’s beauty. They are also curious. Behind the beautiful girl, there is an old woman with a simple dress. The girl and her mother look very different!
“Hello, pretty lady. Who is the woman behind you?” asks them.
“She is my servant,” answers the girl.
The mother is very sad, but she doesn’t say anything.
The girl and the mother meet other people. Again they ask who the woman behind the beautiful girl. Again the girl answers that her mother is her servant. She always says that her mother is her servant every time they meet people.
At last, the mother cannot hold the pain anymore. She prays to God to punish her daughter. God answers her prayer. Slowly, the girl’s leg turns into stone. The process continues to the upper part of the girl’s body. The girl is very panicky.
“Mother, please forgive me!” she cries and ask her mother to forgive her. But it’s too late. Her whole body finally becomes a big stone. Until now people still can see tears falling down the stone. People then call it the crying stone or batu menangis.
8.   The Miser
A miser sold all things that he had to buy a lump made of gold, which he buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at daily. One of his workmen noted his frequent visits to the spot and determined to watch his movements. He soon uncovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold hidden by a miser, and stole it. On his next visit, the Miser, found nothing inside the hole and started to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, looking at him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, “Pray, do not grieve so; but go and put a stone in the hole, and imagine that the gold is still lying there. It will do to you quite the same act; for once the gold was there, you left it nothing, as you did not make the slightest use of it.”
9.   The Boy Who Cried Wolf
A shepherd-boy, who watched a group of sheep near a village, shocked out the villagers three or four times by screaming out, “Wolf! Wolf!” and when his neighbors were there to help him,he laughed at them for their pains.
However the Wolf, truly come at last. The Shepherd-boy, now really in danger, cried in an agony of terror: “Pray, please come and help me; the Wolf is approaching to kill the sheep”; but no one paid any attention to his cries, nor rendered any help. The Wolf, having no cause of scary, at his leisure lacerated or destroyed the whole sheep in group.
10.                     Friends
Bunny rabbit lived in the forest. He had many friends. He was proud of his friends.
One day Bunny rabbit heard the loud barking of the wild dogs. He was very scared. He decided to ask for help. He quickly went to his friend deer. He said: “Dear friend, some wild dogs are chasing me. Can you chase them away with your sharp antlers?” Dear said: “That is right, I can. But now I am busy. Why don’t you ask bear for help?”
Bunny rabbit ran to the bear. “My dear friend you are very strong, please help me. Some wild dogs are after me. Please chase them away,” he requested the bear.
Bear replied: “I am sorry. I am hungry and tired. I need to find some food. Please ask the monkey for help”.
Poor Bunny went to the monkey, elephant, goat and all his friends. Bunny felt sad that nobody was ready to help him.
He understood that he has to think of a way out. He hid under a bush. He lay still the wild dogs went their way.
